Revelation and Renewal: Rose MorrisĀ in Conversation with Jann Everard

I was thrilled to learn I was winner of The Malahat Review's 2018 Open Season Award for fiction. In addition to publication, I was interviewed by Rose Morris, one of the journal's volunteers. "Blue Runaways" will be published in April 2018.

Open Season Awards: Winners for 2018

Jann Everard (fiction), "Blue Runaways"

What does winning the Open Season contest mean to you?
I’ve rarely won anything, much less a literary contest, so learning I’d won the Open Season award was quite a thrill! Judge Carleigh Baker’s comments also meant a great deal to me as they acknowledged that the story had worked—had touched someone emotionally.

The Perfect Gift for Writers

Not sure what to buy the writer in your life for Christmas? Here's an idea: Blood on the Floor: How Writers Survive Rejection. This collection of essays, poems and stories is sure to take the loneliness out of that last rejection letter.
It has already worked for me! As I proofed my short piece in this anthology before it went to press, I discovered it was right behind an essay by fellow Canadian writer, Lori Hahnel. (Who else but a Canadian would refer to their coveted rejection letter from Mark Anthony Jarman?) Lori and I have since connected online and had a few laughs about how this book led to our  introduction.

Another idea: If buying a book for your writer friend isn't in the cards, consider writing a review of their work on Goodreads or elsewhere. This gesture is always appreciated.

The things that make us absurdly happy...and keep us going.

The Spring issue of The Antigonish Review landed on my doorstep a few months ago. My name is listed on the front cover -- see, there it is with the name of my story, "Incessant Egg Layers," underneath. I've never been listed on the front cover of a journal before. It's a small thing, but it made me happy in a way that was totally out of proportion to the event.

As short fiction writers, we can receive a lot of rejection. Or silence. When our stories are published there is sometimes recognition, but usually ... nothing. That's why I was so surprised when a writer from BC -- a total stranger -- sent me a note through the contact page on this site to tell me why he liked this story. Again, I was absurdly pleased. It doesn't take much to make me happy.

I suspect I am not unlike many writers who toil away, trying to create a short story that will resonate with a reader. Even one reader.

So here is what I ask: If you are a reader that has been touched by a story, who nodded and silently proclaimed "yes" when you finished a piece of short fiction in one of Canada's great literary journals, reach out to the writer of that story. These days, chances are they're on Twitter, or they have a website with a contact page. The fact is, they can usually be reached. So drop them an appreciative line. Do it. You'll make someone happy. And maybe kick start their writing day!

Celebrating My Writing Tribe: A Novel, Two Collections and a Memoir

Four of my talented women friends have launched books this season, three here in Canada and one in the US. It's a pleasure to showcase them all!
Picture

Rachel Cantor and I went to school together. When we reconnected years later, I wasn't surprised to discover she was a writer. Rachel's debut novel - A Highly Unlikely Scenario or, a Neetsa Pizza Employee's Guide to Saving the World - is getting lots of notice. She's on Cosmopolitan's list of 10 books by women to read this spring, and she was reviewed in The New York Times. Ben McNally Books will be stocking a few of Rachel's books. Thanks, Ben and Lynn!

It's a great pleasure to see Sara Heinonen's collection of short fiction in book form. Over the last few years I've come to know many of these stories as drafts for feedback. Most of them found publication in Canada's best literary journals before coming together here. Sara is a landscape architect by training and her close connection to the environment is apparent in this debut collection from Mansfield Press.

A Recipe for Disaster & Other Unlikely Tales of Love
by Eufemia Fantetti is a quick and engaging read. The six stories in this collection are perceptive and witty. Eufemia's background as a comedienne is evident. She's as much fun on the page as she is in person. This is definitely a book for readers who have a special relationship with food!

Soon to be released by House of Anansi Press, friend Lynn Thomson's book is described as a "delicately rendered memoir on motherhood, family and the beauty of the natural world." Listen for upcoming interviews with Lynn and Yeats, her now young adult son.

Sneak Peak

The Spring 2014 issue of Still Point Arts Quarterly isn't out until March 1st. But here's a sneak peak at the cover and an excerpt from my story:

As Seen
by Jann Everard

Her voice had a musical quality that made it easy to listen to—compelling in fact—and she articulated every vowel and consonant. My sister had once told me about a yoga teacher she’d had with a voice so resonant that her students would be lulled to a perfect, restful sleep. This voice also had beauty, caught me up, entangled me like a benevolent spider. I pulled a small backless bench from the wall and pushed it up behind her. The cushion touched the back of her knees and she sat heavily. I sat beside her and she continued.

Anthology to benefit World Literacy Canada

25/8/2013

On September 15th, Seraphim Editions will launch Emails from India: Women Write Home, an anthology of personal reflections from 27 writer-travellers. I am one of the contributors.

The upcoming launch is exciting--the book has taken a few years to finally come together. More exciting is the fact that the publisher and the anthology's editor, Janis Harper, have agreed to donate $1 from every print copy sold to World Literacy Canada (WLC), a non-profit organization that supports literacy programs for women in India. I've been a volunteer in WLC's office and at their famous Kama Benefit Reading Series for the last couple of years.

Come to the launch, or check out World Literacy Canada's website. Thanks Janis and Seraphim!
